surprise! {finding out he's a boy}

Man, I'm just so good at announcing special news for my family... then waiting forever to fill in all the details :) I'm sorry I keep dragging this out but I definitely want all the moments documented! So today I'm sharing how I unexpectantly found out the gender of baby #2!

I was 16 weeks and 5 days pregnant when I packed Mia up to head to my second doctor's appointment for this baby. Mia was super excited to go (she loves going to the "doctors", for reasons I don't understand, ha ha! She did get her shots but I guess that didn't scar her!) and so was I! I was looking forward to hearing that sweet heart beat and getting into more of the nitty gritty details with this pregnancy, since our first appointment at 14 weeks was just a quick ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. I didn't plan this appointment around Eric's schedule so that he could be there, because the important one to us was the anatomy ultrasound, which is when we planned to find out the gender!
The first thing the doctor told me when he came into my room was to schedule my ultrasound in 3 weeks (I could have hugged him for letting me schedule a week earlier than the normal 20 weeks!) and then he double checked to see if we were planning on finding out the gender. Of course!! So then he says, "Well, let's just take a look real quick!" Now let's take a minute and talk about how distracted I am at this point... I'm currently stripped down from my stomach down, with a flimsy paper over my lap. The nurse didn't tell me what testing they would be doing so I was stressing (you'd think that after birthing a child already, I'd quit being so shy about this, but nope!) about what was coming my way, instead of really paying attention (my doctor later told me that this was the stage where they do testing for gonorrhea, etc and I could deny the tests if I wanted. I was wishing that the nurse had told me upfront so that I never would have had to undress and stress myself out, ha ha!). The doctor had me lay down and started warming up the ultrasound on my belly. After a minute he asked me, "do you see that?" I wasn't even looking at the screen as I was just waiting to hear the sound of the heart beat when I answered, "huh? Oh yeah!" HA! My doctor looked at me for a second, probably trying not to roll his eyes ha ha, then turned the screen towards me more and said, "so these are the legs...." That's when I really looked at the screen and BAM! "Oh my gosh, it's a BOY!" He started laughing and said, "oh yeah! It's a boy alright!" We had the clearest shot of my baby boy and it was so crazy to see the proof of what I'd been suspecting! Of course I blurted out, "I knew it! Mia told me!!" Which is another story for another time... because you know, I'm real good at dragging out the details ;) My doctor may think I'm a little nutty now, but that's okay ;) Just add it to my list of things I'm blaming on pregnancy!
My first thought after seeing my baby BOY was total relief! I had been feeling so strongly that he was a boy, so it was a bit of a relief to see that my intuition was right, since I depend on it so much with raising Mia! My second thought was that I was SO bummed Eric wasn't there to find out with us! My third thought was... no bows?!
Obviously dressing a boy is all new to me, and I'm sad there won't be any ruffle bum outfits this go around ;)... but we are SO thrilled to be changing the dynamics of our family with a little man! It's been so fun knowing his gender earlier than we were expecting, especially since we had to reschedule the anatomy ultrasound a whole week later! I can't wait to see him at our appointment next week!

This is such a fun to read and sweet post. Hooray for that intuition, it's a crazy wonderful thing isn't it? I am so thrilled for you, but totally agree, no bows = sad face! Thanks for sharing your story, I love it!

Loved reading about this special moment! I think it's great that you'll get to experience girl AND boy stuff...so well rounded you'll be! haha. And your family dynamic will certainly change, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say for the better since it will be even more complete! :)

So awesome friend! If I found out the gender of our next baby without Kevin, he wouldn't be disappointed if I told him it was a boy (; haha So excited for you guys and the newest addition making the way to yall's home!

This just makes me so happy. Is Mia a little future teller or something?! I love that she guessed it was a boy! I know you're bummed about the clothes issues for the little guy, but something tells me you're going to find the cutest stuff for him to wear, too!

I bet Eric was quite shocked when you called him and told him you knew the baby was a boy! lol. That's so awesome that they were able to tell you so early!
Also, it is so neat that Mia is so in tune with your pregnancy--she knew you were pregnant before everyone and she knew it was a boy?! That gives me goosebumps!

What a fun surprise! I knew that my brother was going to be a boy, too (I was almost 3 at the time) and I was right!

Boys are so fun!

YAY!!!!!!!! I have no idea what I'm going to do with a little boy either, especially dressing him, BUT super excited and so excited for you guys!!!

Mia knew all along! During my first pregnancy the doctor told me the gender at 13 weeks, which I totally wasn't expecting, so Joe wasn't there either. I was bummed about that, but it's so hard to say no when they ask if you want to know the gender!

Such a fun story! And that's too bad Eric couldn't be there but obviously you didn't expect it to go down like that. I hope you bought him a baby red sox outfit to tell him the big news! :)

What a fun and unexpected way to find out!!
Marcus predicted right away we were having a girl. These kiddos must have a secret knowledge!

Love it!! So happy for you girlfriend! At least you can keep doing bows and ruffles and sparkles for Mia until she's like 12 and won't let you anymore ;) Hehe! Dressing a little man will be so fun too!!

So exciting!! I have crazy intuition this time too and Scarlett says I'm having the same gender every single time I ask her, so I feel like that has to count for something ;) I can't wait to find out... I have to wait until July 21st though :(

Oh, so fun! You will love having a little boy to love on, he will make your heart grow so much more in ways you never knew. And don't worry, there are so many cute little boy clothes out there! When I went in for our first ultrasound, the tech didn't even ask if I wanted to find out and just told me what she thought! Bah! I was not ready or prepared for that. Anyhow, I'm glad you were able to find out a little bit earlier than expected, even though Eric couldn't be there.

SO fun! I know exactly what you mean about it being a relief to know- I was SO sure we were having a girl the second time that I was stressed out I'd be wrong and then doubt my intuition... luckily I was right, and you were too! :) Can't wait to see that cute little boy!

Yay!!! I love having a big sister and baby brother. When I was pregnant with Axel I felt strongly that he was a boy, but when they told me I was kinda freaked. I guess I thought I had this girl thing down and I didn't know how to raise a boy. Ha!! I laugh at myself now. :) Having a little boy is so so precious. And let me hook you up with some cute boy clothes!

eeeeek!! I love that you just guessed it! I think kids have some crazy intuition sometimes! Yay for fun boy stuff now!!

How exciting! Intuition really is a great guide; I just knew baby #1 was a girl but #2 had me stumped and I still wasn't 100% sure she was a girl even after it was confirmed because everything was so different from her big sister! Funny how that works sometimes.

Yay! Congrats! How exciting to add a little boy to the mix. I think I already knew from Instagram, but man am I out of the blogging loop!

Your doctor is so cool! How awesome to find out early. You are so funny and cute. And yeah, those kids know their stuff. Jed and Levi separately told me I was having a girl this last go around. :)

Hahaha I love that you were so distracted and then were like "WOAH Hello baby boy!!" Good to know it was that obvious, I feel like I'd be like "ummm what are we looking at? Then again I've never seen an ultrasound in person before so maybe I wouldn't. So exciting you're going to have a boy! Instead of bows you can get him cute little hats to wear :)
