our not so perfect marriage...

I was having a conversation with one of my bestie's about marriage the other day.  I have received some comments/emails about how "cute" me and Eric are, or how they bet we rarely (if ever) fight, or how much fun we have together.  I even received a message from a friend saying she was jealous of our relationship (or the relationship she saw on the blog or facebook).  Since the marriage talk I had with my friend a couple days ago, I've really been evaluating my relationship with Eric.  We love hard, play harder, and sometimes we fight the hardest.  Our marriage is not always cute or fun.  But we know we can and will make it through our hard times.  A little look into what our relationship is like...

Life is crazy busy right now, in a good way.
But sometimes at the end of the day we are tired and irritable.
Sometimes we're so done with trying to please others and be nice to everyone we talk to that we forget to be nice to each other.
Sometimes we really hurt each other's feelings.
We are on the defensive with each other way too often.  :(

Most of the time we play, play, play.
We love to be silly with each other.
Eric will grab me and start dancing, it doesn't matter if we're in public or in our home.
Sometimes when I'm working out of town and we're talking on the phone, he'll fart into the phone because he's "worried" I'm missing that. (What in the h.e.double-hockey sticks??)

I like to "pants" Eric every chance I get- haha.  (Ok, so we're a dorky couple with a few gross quirks- ha!)
We love to watch Disney movies and play with kid toys.

But most importantly we love each other all.the.time.
Sometimes when we snuggle we hang on for dear life, because we don't want to let each other go.
Other times I can't stop kissing him :)
The words I love you are used the most in our home.

Sometimes its easier to remember the reasons why Eric made me cry, over the reason's he made me fall in love.  (And visa-versa for him, I assure you.  I can be quite the selfish brat.)  Sometimes it's easier to stay mad, then to forgive and forget.  But I just have to say, life will always be easier with Eric by my side.  I love that man so much....so much that my heart could burst.  I know that's cheesy, but it is so true.  Each day we're learning more and more about being married to one another, and one day I think we'll have it all figured out.  Until then... a few more tears will be shed, a lot more laughter will be heard, and our love will grow forever.
And hopefully we'll produce some good lookin' children along the way ;)

I love this!! All of it is so very true. Sometimes it is easier to remember the bad times, than the good. Wish it weren't like that! Guess that is up to us but those hard times def can/will make us stronger. Marriage def isn't easy! I went from living with my mom, doing what I wanted, having things where I wanted them, & so on, then bam! were married & there's someone else there ha! & you have to get used to each others ways & work on them - together! I love being married but it is work! It is worth the work!

Things can look very different on the outside. Sometimes it's easy to forget to be loving. I think being playful helps.

Oh, and my hubby makes really funny "fake" fart sounds all the time....especially when I bend over. haha! He does it in the phone too when I'm gone! :)

I love this post. It's so raw and honest- those are THE BEST kind of posts... they can be embarrassing to admit sometimes, but usually they're just plain sweet. I love how much you two love each other. :)

Well you guys are freaking cute, even if you do fight like normal people. And I think you guys are doing just fine. Instead of focusing on the fights, you focus on the happy future. Good for you! Forgiveness is the secret, I swear. ; )

I LOVED this post. No marriage is perfectly perfect, but i think the imperfections help us to grow, and fall even more in love along the way:)
and... either all guys are so much alike, or covey and eric could be best buds, because he has totally done the fart into the phone thing.. ha! seriously, I don't understand why men get so much satisfaction from that, lol!
you are so cute courtney! I always love reading your posts:)

I feel like I could have written this! I think one of the reasons we might lose our temper with our spouses (over anyone else) or snap at them is because we feel so safe with them. Nate & I use the verse "Let not the sun go down upon your wrath" in our house often. When we fight about anything, we always resolve it quickly and we never let it fester into something worse. Anyways, you've got it down girl! And as long as you keep doing what you're doing, you and Eric will have a long happy marriage!!

This was such a lovely post! I can relate to a lot of what you said (maybe not the farts thing, my hubby gets so embarrassed by anything like that lol!) but definitely agree that even when relationships aren't perfect and you fight or get on each other's nerves, love and commitment to see it through can mean so much :)

Thank you for this post! Honestly, we do not nearly acknowledge the real ups and downs of it's like to be in a relationship (or married in your case). It's not easy, but love does conquer all. And from that note you wrote, you two will last a lifetime. Because in my eyes, that is was a REAL and PERFECT marriage should be.

You have 35 comments? That's as amazing as your picturesque marriage. Thanks for stopping by my blog. You two are as cute as can be. (You DO buy a lot of clothes at once, I see in previous post. Sounds like my daughter.) I wish you good luck and fair fights. You have to fight occasionally. Just no mean fighting. Stop by again sometime. I am a little jealous of your cuteness and happiness and I'm old enough to know better. It just looks soooo perfect.

NEEDED to read this today! My man is being a straight UP PILL tonight, and sometimes I wonder if our relationship is faltering...Then I remember, he's human, just like me. We all have off days, moody nights. Thanks for reminding me and for stopping by to say hello. :)

Courtney, this is such a wonderful and honest blog post! It's so important to forgive the ones we love. I mean... fights, disagreements, and arguments happen. It's how we move past them that allows us to have better relationships. No one has 'the' perfect relationship, and marriages take work. Isn't it amazing being married to someone who you know will continue working to have a great marriage with you? (:

Liesl said...

Can I just tell you how much I love this open and honest post! Thank you for this, Courtney!

...oh and I realized I just called you both cute in your blog post above, which you are, but I completely understand how it doesn't mean everything is always perfect! :)

As I am busy planning my wedding for next year, I also know that marriage takes work, just as a relationship does, and so many have said how perfect and happy and wonderful me and my unexpected love and fiancé are and we are definitely happy and things are often wonderful, but just as any relationship there are days when the other can annoy or frustrate you, etc...but I LOVE how you said it is sometimes easier to remember the times Eric made you cry over the reasons you fell in love or to stay mad than to forgive and forget, etc...and you are so right!

I think every person has their strengths and faults, that is what makes us human, and no two people are going to be 100% happy or perfect all the time because each is his or her own person in the end with different thoughts, feelings, ways of dealing with things, etc., but it is how you work through those differences and times that is what matters most and one's willingness to do so that will make it work and last in the long run, just as you and Eric will! :)

Phew! That was long...sorry, but thank you again for such a great post! Love your blog!

Liesl :)
